Trip 2 of the Conflict Islands Turtle Conservation Internship
Our second group of volunteers arrived in Papua New Guinea on the 17th November. This was a much bigger group than the first trip, with 10 volunteers coming out to the Conflict Islands. The first night of patrols started well with one green turtle already on the island when we arrived! Across the trip we had an average of 5 turtles per night! 2017/18 Turtle Season Summary
In February we concluded our first EVER season of Turtle Conservation Internships! There is very little known about sea turtle populations in Papua New Guinea. Our aims for the 2017/18 turtle nesting season were to create a baseline dataset on the population of nesting green and hawksbill turtles at the Conflict Islands and subsequently to create a long-term yearly comparison of sea turtle populations at the Conflict Islands. Expansion of our Turtle Nursery
This has been an exciting week at the Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative, with the introduction of two new turtle tanks! Our new turtle tanks are more than double the size of our existing tanks and were made locally at Samarai Plastics in Alotau, Milne Bay Province. We have spent the last week redoing the plumping in the Turtle Nursery and installing new water pumps to accommodate the extra water flow. A Lifelong Journey for Survival
It is an incredible experience, watching baby sea turtle some no bigger than your pinkie, acting upon some instinctive notion that as soon as they hatch, they must make it to the sea as fast as their little legs will carry them. Kind of hard to believe when they can ultimately grow up to 3 meters in length. Turtle Tagging and Conservation at the Conflict Islands
The turtle nesting season has now begun at the Conflict Islands! Green and hawksbill turtles come up onto the beaches of the Conflict Islands to lay their eggs from November to February. The turtles will lay between 80-140 eggs in each clutch and will lay eggs every 2 weeks. This year the Conflict Islands Conservation Initiative has set up our first tagging and monitoring project, to work alongside our Turtle Hatchery and Nursery.
